Professor of Practice (Biomedical Engineering)

Job Information

The new Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Mississippi at Oxford invites applications for a non-tenure track Professor of Practice.


The primary focus of this position will be on teaching design that emphasizes a systematic engineering design process enhanced with discipline-specific domain knowledge in biomedical engineering. Teaching responsibilities will include capstone design courses and project management. The candidate will be expected to work closely with industry partners to develop and manage capstone design projects. Design curricula will be based on textbook material, meet industry best practices, and implement project-based learning.


The candidate will also contribute to the department in matters of curricula and instruction, serve on related committees, have the opportunity to work with student competition teams, help advise and mentor undergraduates, and help coordinate efforts between the program and the University's nationally recognized Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME).


The Biomedical Engineering Program consists of five full-time equivalent faculty and a rapidly growing undergraduate student population. The curriculum includes multiple opportunities for hands-on learning; the department and college place a strong emphasis on experiential learning through design competitions, internships and co-ops, undergraduate research, and study abroad. The design courses taught by the successful candidate are a key component of this experience, in which students develop and demonstrate their proficiency of technical and teamwork skills through hands-on projects.


Job Responsibilities:  Teaching undergraduate courses in capstone design courses and project management. Work with and develop new industry partners to help create internship and cooperative learning opportunities for students.


Minimum Qualifications:  Applicants are expected to have at least a MS in biomedical engineering or a closely related field. Applicants should have at least 8 years of professional experience in an engineering field involving engineering design and project management.

The appointment is anticipated to begin in mid-August, 2019.
